Civil/Environmental Engineering Intern - Water

Position Description: Apex Engineering Group has an opening for a Civil/Environmental Engineering Intern in our Water Group located in our Fargo, ND office. Primary responsibilities include working as a key project team member on water and/or wastewater projects from the planning phase through design and construction. All candidates shall be capable of working independently and collaboratively while contributing to the design and development of project plans and specifications. Interns typically report to a Project Manager or Senior Engineer while working in a team environment. Additional responsibilities may include taking on the role of resident project representative (RPR) in the field during construction projects in North Dakota and Minnesota.

Qualification Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Pursuing BS or MS Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or applicable discipline.
  • Years of Experience 0-3.
  • Solid written and verbal skills are required. Must be able to interact with people at all levels and communicate effectively.
  • General knowledge using Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required.
  • General knowledge of CADD software such as AutoCAD or Revit considered a plus, but not required.
  • Valid Driver’s License is required, or the ability to obtain one.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit and operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
  • May be required to work in an outdoors environment and spend extended time around construction activities.
  • May require prolonged periods of standing and walking to perform some of the typical tasks and duties associated with construction observation.
  • Required to lift objects or containers weighing 50-lbs.
Typical Tasks and Duties:
  • Become familiar with project plans, specifications and the role of the engineer on typical design projects.
  • Candidate shall communicate and confirm their understanding of project details and duties with project engineers and managers.
  • Communicate with supervisor/project manager on a consistent basis to provide updates on project progress.
  • Take on and understand the role of the owner’s on-site representative (RPR) on construction projects, as needed.
  • Understand and follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
  • Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal and ethical manner with a strong attention to detail.
  • Attend company, team and client meetings as needed.
  • Minimum 10 – 20 hours per week.
