Financial Accountant

Position Description: Apex Engineering Group has an opening for a Financial Accountant position located in our Fargo Office. This person will primarily work under and report directly to the Chief Operations Officer and manage all financial accounting activities as they relate to Apex’s business and operations. They will also provide reports and conduct accounting tasks upon request for the CEO/President. The anticipated start date is between December 15, 2019 and January 15, 2020.

Qualification Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field is required.
  • 5-10 years of accounting and/or bookkeeping for a professional services firm with a strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) is required.
  • Experience with QuickBooks (Accounting Software) and Bill Quick (Time and Expense tracking) software is considered a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Windows/Office products – specifically Microsoft Excel is required.
  • Must be willing to interact with people and work in team environments.
  • Must be detail orientated and self-motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • A valid driver’s license is required or the ability to obtain one.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to sit and operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions for at least 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to lift equipment or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
Typical Tasks and Duties:
  • Conduct daily financial data entries (payables) and makes all accounting ledger decisions in QuickBooks.
  • Develop financial reports including profit/loss statements, balance sheet entries and cash flow statements utilizing QuickBooks software.
  • Perform month end, quarterly and annual closing activities such as account reconciliation, revenue accounting, expense accounting, etc.
  • Print checks for payables twice weekly for signature by an authorized owner.
  • Help the revenue generating departments within the company to conduct financial analysis and accounting tasks.
  • Prepare and submit financial reports for company board meetings, lending institutions and contracted business consultants.
  • Prepare financial data for Apex’s FAR Audit consultant and a Statement of Direct Labor, Fringe Benefits and General Overhead as required by DOT’s and Federal Highway Administration.
  • Respond to accounting related questions and inquiries from company management and employees.
  • Supports Management Team in preparation of annual budget, forecasts and projections.
  • This position will require the candidate to expand their accounting knowledge by keeping current with financial regulations and accepted practices.
  • Collaborate with COO and Human Resources on financial matters regarding Employee Benefits.
  • Collaborate with COO on financial matters regarding General Liability and Professional Liability Insurance.
  • Set up authorized project numbers and contract billing information in Bill Quick.
  • Prepares monthly billing and invoicing for project managers to review and process for accounts receivables.
  • Work with payroll processing vendor to accomplish bi-weekly payroll, quarterly and year end reporting, W-2s, and all other payroll related activities
  • This position will require the initiative to think independently and make rational judgment calls.
  • Effectively communicate with management, engineering staff and the company’s bank and tax accountant.
  • Understand and follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
  • Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal and ethical manner with a strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Work related travel and out of town stays are required, but it is anticipated that they will be very infrequent (less than 10 days per year).
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This position may lead to a more prominent role as a Chief Financial Officer depending on the company’s future growth and qualifications of the candidate.
