20th Street South | 6th Ave S to 12th Ave S

Project Summary:

Project Type:
Urban Street Reconstruction

City of Moorhead

20th Street South is an important arterial corridor in the City of Moorhead, MN. The City has reconstructed this corridor in multiple phases from the I-94 Ramps to 12th Avenue South.  Apex Engineering Group led the planning and design for the reconstruction phase of 20th Street South from 6th Avenue South to 12th Avenue South.

Project Details:

The City of Moorhead turned to the engineers and designers at Apex Engineering Group to oversee the preliminary engineering, final design, and bid documents for this urban arterial reconstruction project.

The City of Moorhead has experienced expansive growth, and while this is positive, planning for development and the infrastructure improvements that coincide can be challenging. The objective for this segment of 20th Street South was to accommodate the potential for future growth by incorporating the flexibility of a future four-lane section, while still matching the existing two-lane configurations at each end of the project. To achieve this, Apex provided a traffic safety analysis and four design alternatives which included widening the roadway both with a flush and a divided raised center median. This allowed the City of Moorhead to review and implement the option they felt was the best for this portion of their community. Apex was involved in the preliminary engineering, alternative analysis, public involvement and final design for the project. Ultimately a two lane flush median section with a common left turn lane was chosen, designed and constructed.

The City of Moorhead led the construction efforts, and Apex staff provided assistance and staking during the building phase of the project. The project was completed in 2012.
