County Route 7 | Jct US Hwy 2 to the Burke County Line

Project Summary:

Project Type:
Roadway Reconstruction

Owner:
Mountrail County

Overview:

Apex Engineering Group was pleased to assist Mountrail County with the reconstruction of County Route 7.  Apex provided final design, bid documents, right of way platting, supplemental survey and construction engineering on the 16.8 miles of highway from Junction US Highway 2 to the Burke County Line, near Powers Lake, ND.

Project Details:

Apex’s design work consisted of modifying the existing 24-foot wide gravel road to a 28-foot wide, hot bituminous pavement roadway with three-foot aggregate shoulders. A geotechnical investigation was performed to ensure the design pavement and base section could withstand the rapid increase in truck traffic related to amplified oil activity in the region. A large rail loading facility for gas and oil was located within the project, which posed a challenge as the road had to be kept open for traffic while being constructed. The newly paved section was designed for a 55 mph speed limit and required significant corrections to existing vertical curves to improve sight distance. The design also required a hydraulic analysis of the adjacent ditches and contributing watersheds in order to properly size approach and centerline culverts.

The project was completed in two phases. Phase I was concluded in 2013, which updated the first 2.3 miles north of US Highway 2 to 93rd Avenue NW. Phase II completed 14.5 miles to the Burke County Line near Powers Lake. Phase II was originally designed to be bid and built over two construction seasons; however, the contractor was able to complete all grading and paving in 2014 with minor items finalized in 2015.
