US Highway 85

Project Summary:

Project Type:
Rural Roadway Reconstruction

Owner:
North Dakota Department of Transportation

Overview:

Apex Engineering Group worked as a member of a consultant team that provided an expansion of US Highway 85 between Watford City and Williston, ND The roadway was expanded from a two-lane highway to a four-lane thoroughfare for 38 miles.

Project Details:

Due to the size and complexity, the project corridor was divided into five separate segments. Apex delivered preliminary design, final design, and bidding documents for segments three, four, and five. Approximately 40 right of way plats were also prepared on these three sections, as well as the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis.

On all five segments, Apex conducted the utility coordination process which involved identifying conflicts, preparing conflict plans, and coordinating with 25 separate utility companies. Apex also participated in the public involvement process, including two public meetings and the public hearing for the Environmental Assessment.

Improvements for the entire project included grading, widening, and new construction to establish a four-lane section with a flush median and center left-turn lane. The design and plans were completed under an extremely aggressive schedule. Segment three was completed in 2014, Segment four in 2015, and Segment five is currently under construction.

This project was the largest roadway project awarded to consultants in the history of the North Dakota Department of Transportation. Apex Engineering Group was honored to be on the team for this large, complex highway system that is truly vital to western North Dakota.
